"With courage you will dare to take risks, have the strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity". -- Keshavan Nair
In past leadership tips we've talked about how fear can paralyze us and that courage is required to be an effective leader. We need courage to:
§ Live our dreams
§ Document and commit to our goals
§ Understand our strengths and the strengths of others
§ Communicate
§ Address conflict
§ Develop others
§ Delegate
§ Build and develop new skills
§ Relinquish control
§ Reward and succeed
Michael Lombardo and Robert Eichinger in For Your Improvement say to be a courageous leader we need to be aware of and avoid the following:
§ Not taking tough stands with others
§ Holding back when tough feedback is required
§ Can't present a tough position
§ Lets emotions get in the way
§ Knows but does not disclose
§ Doesn't stand up to issues
§ Is intimidated by others in power
§ Hangs back and consistently, let's others take the lead
§ Is a conflict avoider and is unwilling to take the heat of controversy
§ Fears being wrong, being in a win/lose situation, and won't make the tough calls
Strong leaders must take risks, make tough decisions, empathize with those impacted by their decisions, anticipate and plan courses of action, provide actionable, positive feedback to others, and embrace and help others understand and accept change.
"The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly." -- Jim Rohn
