From time to time, I will bring to you interesting leadership insights, principles & practices that I have learnt a lot from over the years and still learn from.
Would love to hear your perspectives, challenges & thoughts as you read and apply them, as appropriate. Additionally, if there is a leadership concept that intrigues you and you want to know more, please let me know.
Here is the first one : Self Awareness
I would encourage each of you to know how self aware you are today (using the list below) and if there is a gap, see what needs to be done to cover ground quickly.
“First know thyself.” - Socrates
"Leaders need feedback to thrive. If they don't constantly evaluate how they are doing as leaders, they face repeated failure." - The Filson Leadership Group
Self-knowledge is strongly linked to how successful you can be. (This includes seeing yourself as others see you).

- Do you know your “magic dust”? (what you’re especially good at)
- Do you have skills you over-use or under-use?
- Knowing your weaknesses will allow you to grow; you also need to discover your blind spots (remember the Johari window?)
- Note: Our blind spots are those you don’t know or are unwilling to own up to. To overcome blind spots, we need others to help us identify them.
Feedback is critical for improving our self knowledge. Self Awareness is critical to success as a leader.
If you are skilled in the area of self-knowledge you:
- Know your personal strengths weaknesses, opportunities and limits
- Seek continuous feedback
- Gain insight from your mistakes
- Are open to criticism
- Aren’t defensive
- Are receptive to talking about short comings
- Appreciate (and action) performance reviews that include both your “positives and negatives."
When soliciting feedback, choose people that know you best and those with similar styles as well as those with different styles. This will provide a better indicator of your highest and lowest indicators.
